Dawne Dill, an English teacher at Century High School, was named the Carroll County 2021 Teacher of the Year during the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

Dill earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a specialization in Public Speaking and Humanities from Purdue University in 1997. In 2000, she earned a Masters of Education from Indiana Wesleyan University where she was selected by her fellow students as the Leading Professional in the Cohort. Dill has completed post Masters work at Walden University and McDaniel College.

Dill began her teaching career at Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1997. From 2000-2002 she taught at South Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Later in 2012, Dill started teaching English at Century High School where she has remained for the past nine years. She currently teaches English 10 and Advanced Placement Language. She has also taught Freshman Seminar, English 9, Newspaper, and Yearbook.

Dawne is the Health, Human, and Social Sciences Academy Leader, a member of the Instructional Leadership Team, and a member of the School Improvement Team at Century. She also is the co-sponsor of the Class of 2023. In addition, she has served as a lead curriculum developer for our county English program and mentored student teachers from McDaniel College.

Dill is known by her colleagues to be a consummate professional, master teacher, and dedicated leader and mentor. She is a true champion for both students and teachers and believes that collaboration, inclusion, and compassion are keys to success for everyone. She works tirelessly beyond expectations to nurture students’ academic growth and social wellbeing.

Dawne values and believes in her students and encourages them to accomplish great things in the classroom. She builds a relationship of trust by encouraging students to recognize that what they are doing is relevant to them and engaging them to work harder than they might have thought possible.

She takes pride in the fact that her students routinely score high on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) and Advanced Placement (AP) tests, but is most proud of her impact on how they feel about themselves and what they believe they can achieve.

The Carroll County Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual who represents Carroll County teachers in the Maryland Teacher of the Year Program, and possibly the National Teacher of the Year Program. Working in collaboration with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, this year’s finalists for Teacher of the Year were selected by the Chamber of Commerce as winners of the Chamber’s Outstanding Teacher Awards.
